My name is Mark Merchant and I am a graduate of Alcorn State University in Lorman, MS. I completed my under graduate degree in Recreation in 1995. In 2003 I completed a Health and Physical Education degree from Saint Cloud State in Saint Cloud, MN. In 2010 my last degree was a M.S. degree in Leadership and Administration from Grand Canyon University.

As a teacher at TMS, I have eleven years of teaching experience as a certified teacher and eleven years as a paraprofessional. I have coached football since 1994 and track. I saw many of the athletes I coached go on to  college and become productive citizens in the workforce. I must say that I have learned a lot from students and I have learned a lot about myself in the process while working around students of greatness.

Hello to those who may read my information. First and foremost, My name is Mark Merchant. I am from a small town in Mississippi. Leland is that town. It is truly a town of WINNERS. There were many Great blues singers, NFL football players, and other entertainers. I will also add it is the home of Kermit the Frog created by Jim Henson.

I am currently in my eleventh year at Turner Middle School as a Health & Physical Education teacher and Athletic Director. I coach football and work in our after-school program.
I got my start in teaching and coaching after graduating from Alcorn State University. In 1994 -2001 I served as a paraprofessional in Greenville and Leland, MS. In 1998-2001, I spent a few years at home where I found a new found love for being around people who were special to me.
After leaving Leland, MS I moved to St. Cloud, MN with my  family. I made a decision to return to school where I received my second B.S. degree in Health & P.E. During my time there, I was awarded Kappa Delta PI Student Teacher of the Year. I was honored by Multicultural services as Non- Traditional Student of the Year by my peers and,  was posted in ED VIEW magazine for those accomplishments.

I received my first degree in Recreation at Alcorn State University in 1995. I was a Dean’s list honoree and a Presidential list honoree during my time there. On the athletic field, I was a three year starter as a standout fullback. In addition, I received my Masters Degree in Leadership & Administration in December 2009.
I am currently married to the former Antoinette Wadlington of Chicago IL. We have a wonderful daughter who attends Douglas County High School, and she is adored by all.

This happens to be one of my favorite quotes. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.  We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?  Actually, who are you not to be?  You are a child of God.  Your playing small does not serve the world.  There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.  We are all meant to shine, as children do.  We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.  It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.  And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. “
